Joan Hyman Bio
Joan Hyman leads teacher trainings, retreats, and workshops across the globe and many popular vinaysa flow classes at Yogaworks in Los Angeles. She has been teaching for over twenty years beginning in her hometown of Philadelphia with fitness and dance. She pursued a career in dance in New York after earning her Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science from Temple University. She was introduced to yoga at NYC's famous JivaMukti and Om with Cyndi Lee being her first yoga teacher in the late 90's. She then began a lifestyle change and followed her love for yoga to Santa Monica, California and completed the Yogaworks Teacher Training under the watchful eye of Maty Ezraty and Lisa Walford in 2002. Here she was introduced to the ashtanga method under Maty whom she later assisted and mentored and who Joan credit's as making her the practitioner and teacher she is today. Her love for vinyasa flow didn't stop and she mentored and studied under Annie Carpenter, who is known for her "smart flow" and intelligent sequencing. She received her Yogaworks Certification in 2006 and took her first trip to Mysore, India to study with the beloved Sri K. Pattihbi Jois and his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy. She recently returned from her second trip from Mysore and traveled extensively through India from ashrams in Rishikesh to an Ayurvedic Retreat Center in Kerala. She has also studied with world re-knowned teachers Prem Carlisi and Heather Duplex in Sri Lanka, Ubud, Bali, and Kauai, Hawaii who also offer teachings in meditation, pranayama, and ayurveda. She continues to practice ashtanga daily under traditional teachers who have studied with Guruji including Tim Miller and Jorgen Christiansson in Southern California.
Her classes are fun, upbeat, and always evolving. She draws attention to breath, alignment, and adds vinyasa to heat and cleanse the body. Her sequences are safe and effective and well thought out. Her blend of lightness mixed with a strong level of intensity is open to all levels and can help anyone move deeper in their practice.
Joan continues to grow in her teachings by following her heart's intention and opens herself up to experiences that help her evolve in her own life. She has a passion for traveling and learning about other cultures and people. Her teachings come from an organic intuitive place and she continues to honor her own teachers who have passed their wisdom on to her. Her other interest include ayurveda (the science of life), chakras, meditation, and cooking healthy vegetarian food. " I am so blessed to be able to do what I love and stay deeply connected to my yoga practice. This is truly an honor, which I hope I can pass onto others. Namaste!"
